Your Lilith sign

Black Moon Lilith is a calculated point, not a body: it marks the place on the Moon's orbit where the Moon is farthest from Earth, called the lunar apogee. In a chart it is read as the part of a person that refuses to be tamed or negotiated with — what she will not apologise for, and where she has been made to feel she should. Finding your Lilith sign needs the date and city; the house it falls in needs the birth time.

Lilith attracts more mystique than any other point in the chart, and most of it gets in the way. The astronomy is simple, the reading is more sober than the reputation, and the main practical difficulty is that three different things share the name.

This page covers the one nearly every calculator means — Black Moon Lilith, the mean lunar apogee — and says plainly where the others differ, so that a Lilith sign found on one site can be compared with one found on another.

What Lilith is, astronomically

The Moon's orbit around the Earth is not a circle but a slight ellipse. The point of that ellipse farthest from Earth is the apogee. Black Moon Lilith is the position of the apogee projected onto the zodiac — a direction in the sky, with nothing physically there.

That direction moves. The apogee drifts forward through the zodiac at a little over forty degrees a year, so Lilith spends roughly nine months in each sign and takes just under nine years to go round the whole circle. People born within a few months of each other usually share a Lilith sign; people born a year apart usually do not.

Because it is a point and not a body, Lilith has no light, no gravity and no visible motion. What it has is a precise mathematical position at any moment, which is what a calculator returns.

Our free chart calculator uses the mean Black Moon Lilith, computed with our own implementation rather than taken from a third-party library. Mean Lilith is what the large majority of calculators show, so your sign will match theirs.

Three Liliths — and why calculators disagree

If two sites give you different Lilith signs, they are almost certainly computing different things. There are three points in circulation under the same name.

There is also a hypothetical *Dark Moon* Lilith from early twentieth-century astrology, which assumed a second moon of Earth that does not exist. It survives in a few ephemerides and nowhere else.

What Lilith describes in a person

Strip away the mythology and the readings converge on something specific. Lilith marks the part of a person that will not comply — the trait, appetite or way of being that she was taught, usually early and usually by someone she depended on, to hide, soften or be ashamed of. It is the thing she keeps being told is too much.

So two feelings tend to sit together at the Lilith placement: a refusal, and a shame about the refusal. The sign describes *what* is being refused and in what manner; the house describes *where in life* the pressure to comply was strongest, and where the refusal shows itself now.

Read that way, Lilith is not about being wicked or dangerous. It is about the cost of being made to feel that a genuine part of oneself is unacceptable — and about what happens when that part is finally allowed. This is why Lilith placements so often turn up in the histories people tell about the moment they stopped apologising.

Lilith by house: where it plays out

The sign says how; the house says where. Lilith in the tenth house puts the whole drama in public standing and career — the woman who was told to be smaller at work, and who eventually stops. In the seventh it lives in partnership: the part of her a relationship keeps trying to edit out. In the fourth it belongs to family and home, usually to a parent who could not tolerate it.

The house is also the reason Lilith needs a birth time. The sign can be read from the date alone, because Lilith moves slowly. The house depends on the ascendant, which changes every two hours — so a chart drawn for an unknown time puts Lilith in a house it may never have occupied.

If the birth time is unknown, take the sign and leave the house open. What is exact without a time and what is not is set out in birth chart without a birth time.

How not to read Lilith

The internet reading of Lilith is almost entirely about sex and danger, and it is worth saying why that is a distortion rather than a secret. Sexuality is one of the areas where people are most often shamed for wanting what they want, so Lilith shows up there frequently. But it shows up just as often in ambition, anger, appetite, intelligence and the refusal to be agreeable — and a reading that only sees the bedroom has missed most of the chart.

The second distortion is treating Lilith as a verdict. A strong Lilith placement does not make anyone a rebel or a villain; it marks where compliance cost the most. Some people spend their lives suppressing it and pay in resentment; some express it and pay in conflict; a chart cannot say which, and should not pretend to.

The third is weight. Lilith is one point among many, and a minor one next to the Sun, the Moon, the ascendant and the planets. Reading it first, or reading it alone, gives a caricature. Read it after the big three, as a footnote that explains one particular sore spot — which is exactly what it is good at.

How to find your Lilith sign

Any chart calculator that includes Black Moon Lilith will show it by sign and degree from your date and city; add the birth time and it gives the house as well. Check which Lilith the calculator uses — most, including ours, use the mean apogee — before comparing results between sites.

You can calculate your chart here for free: Lilith appears in the list of points alongside the North and South Nodes and Chiron, with its sign, degree and house, and the calculation runs in your own browser.

FAQ

Is Black Moon Lilith a planet?

No. It is a point on the Moon's orbit — the place where the Moon is farthest from Earth, called the apogee — projected onto the zodiac. Nothing is physically there; it is a direction with a precise, calculable position. The asteroid that also carries the name Lilith is a different object in the asteroid belt and is not what most calculators mean.

Why do two calculators give me different Lilith signs?

Because there are two ways to compute the apogee. The mean Black Moon Lilith is a smoothed, steadily moving position and is what most calculators show. The true, or osculating, Lilith is the apogee's actual momentary position, which oscillates around the mean by up to about thirty degrees and can sit a sign away on a given date. Check which one each site uses; ours uses the mean.

Do I need my birth time to find my Lilith sign?

Not for the sign: Lilith moves through a sign in roughly nine months, so the date alone settles it except in the last few days before a change. The birth time is needed for the house, because the houses are drawn from the ascendant, which changes every two hours. Without a time, take the sign and leave the house open rather than accept a chart drawn at noon.

Is Lilith only about sexuality?

No. Lilith marks the part of a person she was taught to hide or be ashamed of, and sexuality is only one of the places that happens. It shows up just as often in ambition, anger, appetite, intelligence and the refusal to be agreeable. A reading that reduces Lilith to the bedroom has missed most of what the placement describes.
